Family Matters

January 10, 2012 -- In line with our belief in the importance of family, Kaya has been able to reunite many of our children with their families over the years. Recently, one child in our program was reunited with his family in Santa Cruz after over a year of visits with his family and counseling with Kaya’s clinical team. Another child at Kaya has also started regular visits with his biological father, with whom he has never lived. We hope that this is the beginning of a healthy and stable relationship between this father and son pair.

For the parents of the children in our external program, Kaya held its first ever parent workshop in late October. The workshop was attended by 24 families who gathered to discuss the topic of parental supervision. Many of the parents had talked about struggling with setting limits for their children, especially as their children age. Since one of the main contributing factors that lead children to enter street life is a lack of supervision, this topic was especially relevant. The conversation focused on how to connect effectively with children in the parent role. The Kaya staff received very positive feedback about the workshop and is looking forward to continuing with a parent workshop series.
